Larry McRae

Larry Britt McRae age 78, peacefully passed away Thursday, February 4, 2021. Larry was born January 13, 1943 to Britt and Mary Christine Powell McRae of Anderson Creek, N.C.

Larry attended and graduated from Sanford Central High in 1961 and was active in football, track and basketball.  He was nominated to be a Morehead Scholar and served as Student Body President.  While playing football Larry obtained his nickname “Twinkle Toes or “Twink “for short.  His classmates deemed him fast on his toes.  That nickname followed him throughout his life.  After graduating Sanford Central, Larry met the love of his life, Sue Kelly at Morton’s Drive Inn, Sanford, in 1964. It was love at first sight.  They were married in 1965 and remained married for 55 years.  In 1971 their son, Brian Landry McRae was born.

Larry’s employment began at Roberts Company and then in 1966 he would join Steel and Pipe Corporation, where he remained for 47 years, became President and upon retirement was Chairman.  Larry was a former President of Rotary, Governor of the Moose Lodge, and a member of the Sanford Elks Lodge.  On weekends you could catch Larry playing a round of golf with his buddies or high up in a deer stand.  Larry loved nature and everything about it.  He enjoyed long walks in the woods and a hobby of collecting arrowheads, in which gathered many during his walks.  He enjoyed sharing his love and knowledge of nature with others, especially his wife Sue, son Brian and two grandchildren Morgan and Landry.

To Morgan and Landry he was known as Paw Paw.  Paw Paw loved them with all his heart.  He was certainly a proud grandpa.  Larry was preceded in death by his father, Britt McRae, mother/ Mary Christine Powell McRae and Brother Donald Chris McRae.

He is survived by wife/ Sue Kelly McRae; Son/ Brian Landry McRae (Christa); granddaughter Morgan McRae; grandson Landry McRae; sister/ Phebe McRae Eason; brother in law Ronnie Kelly; sister in law / Vivian McRae, and many nieces and nephews.

Larry was one of my early friends when I moved to the Sanford area from Jonesboro. We had some great fun at Boy’s State one summer. ( George Jackson, Bobby Kelly,  others I can't remember ) Car pooled for a number of years.  Had a few epic nights at the swing sets on the hill on Bragg ( R. D. Carson and more )

He was a great friend. I’ll miss him, as so many who have led the way for us. Peace to you

Sorry I could not pulll out Jade Wicker and Herb Goldston in the name of six who when to Boys' State 1960. It was quite a treat for me, since I was planning desperately to apply and hopelfuly attend UNC in 1961.  How lucky the six of us were.  We lived the dreams so many in the  world do not get to even dream.  60  years since graduation.. some of you I have know longer than that. The Jonesboro group, I started with in third grade.  Many are gone now..  I have drifted away from all  of you.  I apologize.  We thought we would never let it happen. But we did.  We can't get those years back, but we can reflect and enjoy the memories we made a children and your adults during those formative years.  May you all be safe. Jim

The world lost a good example of friendship when it lost Larry.  I only wish I could give my grandchldren the same kind of safe fun and happiness that we experienced growing up in that little town of Sanford.  It was the stuff that great movies could have been made of, never to be again. Rest in peach Larry.

Our class has lost a generous and kind friend and will be missed by us all.

I remember his special kindness to my Mom and Dad when Larry and Sue were their neighbors in the Owl's Nest.  It was always such a delight to visit with him when I came home to visit my folks.

My deepest condolences to Sue and her family.
