In conversations with Eddie's partner, Karen, we have learned the following:
Eddie was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011. He went through radiation and chemotherapy treatments until his condition improved.
Unfortunately his cancer returned in 2018.
During December of 2019 Eddie was admitted to the VA Hospital in Durham where he remained until his passing February 2, 2020.
Karen stated Eddie was very pleased with the number of friends who visited him during his stay at the VA Hospital.
Eddie had planned for his passing and specified cremation and that his ashes be deposited into the ocean at Surf City, with no services; just family attending.

The relationship between Ed Matthews and the ocean at Surf City can be described as spiritual. I will never forget one day we were out on the pier at Surf City and a whale swam by right up next to the pier made a circle and swam by again. We got a good chuckle from the description of the whale by a fisherman on the pier "big old s.o.b.s, ain't they."

It's always sad for us to lose a classmate, and Eddie was a friend to all. We're gonna miss him.
