Theodora Ellen Horwath (McShane) Vaughan, 78, was born in Torrington, CT on August 2, 1943 and died in Louisville, KY on February 28, 2022. She is predeceased by her parents, Theodore "Ted" Martin Horwath and Shirley Irene Scanlon, and brother Timothy Edward Horwath.
Tedi will miss her family - Children, Melissa Anne McShane and Michael Houston McShane (Lesley), Melissa's daughter, Shelley Anne Buth (Dylan), great-grandson Harrison Carter Buth, Michael's son, Ian Houston McShane all of Louisville, KY and daughter, Catherine Dunning McShane of Los Angeles, CA. Brothers, Peter David Horwath (Lin) of Louisville, KY and Jeffrey Michael Horwath (Theresa) and nephew Tyler Jeffrey Horwath of CT.
Tedi was passionate about the arts, music, and education, working for non-profit organizations in Louisville, KY: The Greater Louisville Fund for the Arts, The Louisville Science Center, and the University of Louisville School of Music. She graduated from U of L with undergraduate degrees in art history and oil painting with Honors, completing 29 hours on her master's degree in art history. She was a member of the 1992 Leadership Ky Class.
She worked for the Institute of Cultural Affairs, Chicago, IL, doing small town community development programs across Kentucky, as well as replicable and sustainable projects for villages worldwide to provide running water from nearby mountains for drinking, agriculture and animals. She was able to travel extensively to 37 countries and lived in Japan for a time.
Tedi will miss family picnics at the Hubbard's with her 30 first cousins. She is the granddaughter of Michael Horwath and Catherine Haas and John J. Scanlan, Jr. and Eva Mae Wilson, all of Torrington. She is grateful to her grandfather Johnnie Scanlon (Warner Theatre) and her Aunt Liligene Horwath Metcalf for passing some of their artistic talent to her.
Tedi will be celebrated in a private ceremony.

She was my date for Jr Sr. I felt on top of the world to have her on my arm that night. She belonged to Mr Wilkins but she was mine that night. Beauty in every way you can imagine. Genuine too. How lucky we were to have had her in our presence. God bless us all

Tedi and I were fast friends since the minute she walked into Sanford with her Yankee accent. She spent many days and nights at my home on McNeill Road in Sanford. I visited her often at the farm where her family lived for a while and again on Gulf Street during our high school days, but most of our free time was at my home. Her first taste of grits were served her at my breakfast table and she never gave up her love of the dish, writing and speaking often of how it was her permanent, early introduction to the south. We along with Judy Glass, used an old wooden trailer to take our belongings to Woman's College together, remaining great friends throughout that period. We had sons both named Michael and stayed in touch as she moved from N.Y. to Morehead to Raleigh and on to Kentucky. She visited me when on her way through N.C. and we always picked up laughing where we left off on the last visit. She instilled fun whereever she went, especially in classes at Sanford Central. She was a faithful friend, one, that I will continue to miss forever.
