Iola Capps Hilliard, age 80, of Carthage, NC, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2023 at her home.

She was born in Northampton County, NC on October 10, 1942 to the late Taylor McCrae Capps and Mattie Buchanan Capps.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Floyd Poe Hilliard and a brother Robert Lynn Capps.  Mrs. Hilliard worked as a substitute teacher years ago and was an active member of Calvary United Pentecostal Church.  More than anything she loved her family, especially her grandchildren.  Little children gravitated to her.  At church they called her “Nannio”.  She enjoyed going to the beach and spending time with her family and church family. 

She is survived by her children Rhonda H. Venable (Jeffrey) of Carthage, Darrel Floyd Hilliard of Carthage; brother Bennie Dick Capps (Becky) of Shelby, sister Teresa Capps Brewer (Warren) of Sanford; grandchildren Morgan Bullins (Timmy), Ryan Venable (Elizabeth), Kaitlyn Tillman (Ryan); and great-grandchildren Kinlee Venable, Abigail Bullins and Adalynn Tillman.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 28, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Calvary United Pentecostal Church with the funeral service following Wednesday at 1:00 PM with Rev. Steve Simpson officiating. Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens.
