You probably remember our 10th grade science class – the one where we had to dissect a worm, then later on a frog.  The worm was no problem, but the frog was another story.

I remember walking into class that morning and smelling the preservative the frogs were kept in.  My stomach did a few moves that let me know this would not be a good day.

Mrs. Phillips started the class by instructing us how to dissect the frog, and what to look for once we had the frog cut open.  Fortunately, I was in the back of the room and no one noticed I was not having a good day.

After about fifteen minutes of looking inside the frog, I saw Kay heading for the door.  Kay was very pale and looked like she was going to pass out.  I saw this as my opportunity to get out of the class, so I started following Kay.  Mrs. Phillips stopped me at the door and asked where I was going.  I told her I was just going to check on Kay that I was concerned she was really sick.  Mrs. Phillips probably knew I was not being truthful but fortunately she didn’t stand in my way of getting out of the classroom.

When I found Kay outside, she assured me she was o.k. and that I should return to class.  I told her I wouldn’t leave her while she was sick. We sat on one of the benches outside of the science building until that period was over. I don’t know if Kay ever caught on that I was as sick as she was – if she did, she never mentioned it.

Mrs. Phillips never mentioned it either other than to give me an “incomplete” on that assignment.

Kay was such a special person and good friend to many of us.  There are wonderful memories from our growing up with Kay...scouts, horseback riding, summer camps, dances, playing with her dog,  Best of all were the many laughs and happiness she shared with us.

It is wonderful to hear people praise an old friend like this.

I was friends with all 3 Buchanan children but especially with Kay since she was nearest my age. Her parents and mine were best friends the whole time we were growing up. She has been sick for so long that her passing is probably a blessing. Still, it is sad. I wonder what happened to all of her dogs. That is the thing I most remember about her. What a business she had going.

Kay was truly special person who was a friend to all.  As many have said, I remember many fun gatherings at her house.  I was truly blessed to call her my friend.

I remember Kay's parties and her smiling face.  When some of us visited her at her care facility some time back, she was confused at first but, when Bob Kelly mentioned them riding horses together, Kay's smile returned to her face and she seemed happy to see us.

Charlie Hatch asked me to post this for him:

I always enjoyed going to the Buchanans and playing basketball across the street from their house.  Then we would go into Kay's basement and play pool.  Kay beat me every time.

My most vivid memory of Kay was us getting in trouble in the library for talking too loudly.  We just had to talk to each other and usually it was something funny.  She always told me funny stories about the horses and her dogs and of course I laughed out loud.   And because we all rode together I enjoyed the horses stories even more.  She nearly always kept me laughting.  I remember those wonderful parties at her house, the dancing and fun just hanging out on many weekends together.  She was in a facility just down the street from my home but she did not recognize me and I did not visit as often as I should have.   I do however have my good memories of Kay.
